Jim Laird was originally from Ironwood, Michigan where he used to walk out hot horses for 25 cents and thought he was overpaid! Jim owned a horse since he was in the 7th grade. Jim was a WHHA director for 10 years and an eight term president and was instrumental in expanding the organization. Jim was named Horseman of the Year in 1983 by the WHHA and received a Special Achievement Award in 1991. Jim was also a five term president and founding member of the Wisconsin Horse Foundation, an organization formed to help obtain pari-mutual legislation in Wisconsin. Jim received the Appreciation Award from the Horse Foundation in 1992. On the national scene Jim was the USTA Director for District 4-B. He served on the Drivers and Licensing Committee and the Fairs Committee at the USTA.
