John M. McMahon
1910-1982
Inducted 1992

John McMahon was born at Briggsville, WIsconsin in Marquette County on the family homestead. He lived his entire life in Marquette County. John's love for horses started with ponies that were on the farm that he grew up on. This love for horses started at a very early age and continued all his life. John purchased his first team of working horses in 1931. In the early 40s John started showing western pleasure horses but by the mid-40s John was anxious for more excitement. This is when John became interested in Thoroughbred horses and raced this breed through the 60s. In the early 60s, John was looking for new challenges and on hand experiences with the horses. It was then that John took up working with harness horses. John's love for the harness horses had him spending many hours at the Marquette County fairgrounds where he trained horses. In the 70s John spearheaded the effort to get harness racing back at the fair in Westfield. Some of John's most notable horses were Rebecca Queen, Dave Herberling, Heidi Wisco, Tommy Wisco and Prairie Buck.
