Bernard Shepherd
Inducted 1994

Bernard "Honest Shep" Shepherd was born in Sabin, Wisconsin in 1910, and became actively involved with harness racing in 1940. Shep drove competitively through 1975 and had won the "old timers" races at Aurora Downs in 1973 & 1974. During his career Shep raced at the fairs and the pari-mutual meets. Shep trained and raced many horses over the years for scores of owners. When Shep wasn't racing he hauled horses for the pari-mutual tracks. He covered the Midwest and often drive to the East Coast to haul horses to Chicago. In the 1950s Shep purchased his own starting gate, a 1950 Roadster. Shep has continued into the 1990s with his starting duties, he is the oldest licensed starter on record and when he isn't in the gate you can find him helping out in the judges stand. "Honest Shep, the horseman's friend" has dedicated over 50 years to the sport of harness racing.
