History of the WHHA

From The Horse Review - February 11, 1931

On January 29th articles of incorporation were filed in Madison for the Wisconsin Breeders and Harness Horse Association. The incorporators are Dr. J.P. West, of Madison, Ora Tayor, of Elkhorn and A.L. Duray of Kenosha. This incorporation was a result of a meeting held in Madison December 12 and which was well attended by the horsemen of the state.

Mr Walter S. Williams, the secretary and treasurer of the Wisconsin organization, reports that the horsemen throughout the state have been quick to see the advantages of the association and have been very willing to join. To those who have been tardy it might be suggested that they respond at once by sending in their checks for $5 to secretary Williams at 453 Jackson Drive, Oshkosh, Wis.

The purposes of the association are: First, to lengthen the harness racing season in Wisconsin. Second, to secure larger purses for harness racing. Third, to correct the prevailing evils in the judges' stand. Fourth, to gain a better public acceptance of harness racing.

Mr Williams states that the needs for this organization are greater today than ever, for many horses were purchased at the last Chicago sale by Wisconsin fanciers and a number of these went to brand new owners.
