Most foals are born in the spring (March, April or May). Mothers (also known as fgdams) give birth to only one foal per year. Foals stay with their dams for 5-6 months, then they are weaned and go to their own part of the farm. At this time they are called WEANLINGS. At one year of age weanlings turn into YEARLINGS. All Standardbreds celebrate their birthday on January 1st, even if they are born in April or May!

In November of a Standardbred yearling's year, they start training to become a racehorse! They learn what a harness is and learn how to go left and right when a driver tells them to. In Wisconsin, they are given some time off in February of their two-year-old year to grow taller and help their bones grow. Then they are put back in training and start to race in July!

Some Standardbreds can race into their teenage years. All Standardbreds must stop racing when they turn 15 years old.
